Exploring Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica: A Family Adventure

I’m excited to share with you my recent adventure in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica, with my family. This trip was all about exploring the beauty and culture of this amazing place, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it.
Bordeaux: A Seafood Haven
Our journey began at Bordeaux, a spot renowned for its authentic Jamaican fish and seafood. We parked and headed across the road to indulge in some delicious food. I always stop at this particular vendor for his steamed fish and crackers, and of course, conch when it’s in season. The fish here is fresh, caught right off the coast, and you can really taste the difference.
While there, we also got to see a crocodile casually sunbathing nearby – quite the sight! But soon, it was time to gather the family and head to our next destination.
YS Falls: Natural Beauty and Family Fun
YS Falls was our next stop. It’s important to note that it’s open from 9:30 AM to 3 PM, closed on Mondays and public holidays, and has a group limit of no more than 15 persons. The entrance fee is 25 USD for foreigners and 1800 JMD for locals. The falls are a series of cascading waters, creating a stunning, natural water feature that’s perfect for a family day out.
We took a short bus ride to the main area of the falls, where we found picnic tables and spots to relax. The falls themselves are a breathtaking sight – a multi-tiered cascade of clear, refreshing water.
Pelican Bar: A Unique Experience
After enjoying the falls, we headed to Pelican Bar, a unique bar located in the middle of the sea. To get there, we took a boat ride, which was an adventure in itself. My aunts were a bit nervous, but the skilled local fishermen ensured a safe journey.
Pelican Bar is the brainchild of Floyd, a local fisherman. It started as a simple hangout spot for him and his friends and has now become a must-visit destination. The bar offers a relaxed atmosphere with stunning ocean views, and you can even leave a personal memento behind, like a flag or a signed dollar bill.
Appleton Estate: A Rum Lover’s Paradise
Our final stop was the Appleton Estate, famous for its rum. The tour started with an educational film, followed by a demonstration of how sugarcane juice was traditionally extracted using a donkey-powered mill. We got to try our hand at it, which was harder than it looked!
We learned about the rum-making process, from fermentation to distillation, and even got to taste different types of rum. The estate also offers a food tour, which is included in the tour price.
Other Attractions in Saint Elizabeth
Saint Elizabeth is full of other attractions too, like the Jamaica Zoo, the Black River Safari, and ATV adventures. There’s something for everyone here, whether you’re a nature lover, an adrenaline junkie, or just looking to relax and enjoy the scenery.
